2027: Ex-Footballer Mark Idum Declares Bid for House of Reps Seat in Cross River

A former footballer, Mark Idum, has declared his intention to contest the House of Representatives seat for Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency of Cross River State under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 general elections.

Idum, who is currently based in the United States, formally announced his political ambition on Thursday, saying the decision followed what he described as extensive consultations with political stakeholders, community leaders, and residents across the constituency.

According to him, the encouragement and support received during the engagements strengthened his resolve to join the race.

A native of Aliforkpa in Yache Ward, Yala Local Government Area, Idum said his aspiration is driven by the need to reposition federal representation for the constituency and deliver tangible development outcomes.

“I am stepping forward with a clear sense of duty and commitment to service. This decision is rooted in my resolve to deliver practical solutions and sustainable development that directly impact the lives of our people,” he said.

He outlined a development agenda anchored on service, accountability and measurable impact, pledging a combination of grassroots engagement and effective legislative action if elected.

On health, Idum promised to prioritise improved access to affordable and quality healthcare, particularly at the primary level. He said he would support the upgrade of primary healthcare centres, facilitate medical outreach programmes, and attract federal health interventions to the constituency.

“Beyond interventions, I will advocate policies that improve funding, staffing and equipment in our health institutions so our people can access quality care without travelling long distances,” he said.

On infrastructure, the former footballer stressed the need for improved road connectivity across rural communities, describing it as critical to economic development. He pledged to pursue the construction and rehabilitation of key access roads in collaboration with relevant federal agencies.

Idum also promised reforms in the education sector, including renovation of schools, provision of learning materials, and support for teachers, while advocating increased access to federal education programmes and infrastructure.

He further identified agriculture, power supply and potable water as priority areas, pledging support for rural electrification projects, improved power infrastructure, and provision of boreholes and water schemes in underserved communities.

Reaffirming his commitment to inclusive leadership, Idum said he would maintain regular engagement with constituents and ensure their voices are reflected in national decision-making if elected.
