The 2001 set of Government College Ketu, Lagos, has marked its 25th anniversary with a series of activities that brought together old students, former teachers and other stakeholders.

As part of activities to commemorate the silver jubilee, members of the set paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, who was also a member of the 2001 class.

The delegation was led by the alumni president, Damilare Shittu, alongside the anniversary committee co-chair, Rhoda Adeniji, and the welfare secretary, Deji Ogunsanwo.

Receiving the delegation, Emetu expressed appreciation for the visit and pledged his support for the silver jubilee celebrations.

He commended the anniversary planning committee for what he described as the “remarkable work” it had done in organising the reunion and said he looked forward to the grand finale of the celebrations.

Earlier, the alumni association had held a press parley where the programme of activities for the anniversary was unveiled.

Speaking at the event, Shittu said the 25th anniversary provided an opportunity for members of the set to reflect on their individual journeys since leaving the school and reconnect with the institution that helped shape their lives.

“Twenty-five years is not just a number. It represents the journeys we have each taken since leaving those gates, the careers built, the families raised, the lives touched.

“This anniversary is our opportunity to reflect on how far we have come, and recommit to the institution that made us,” he said.

A major highlight of the anniversary was a football and games day held on Saturday.

The Government College Ketu Class of 2001 faced the Lagos State Model College, Kankon, Class of 2001, in a series of sporting and recreational activities.

The programme featured football, paintball, snooker, table tennis, swimming and PS5 gaming, providing an opportunity for members of both sets to reconnect and strengthen old friendships.

The sporting activities were followed later in the evening by a grand silver jubilee gala.

One of the major highlights of the gala was the recognition of former teachers who contributed to the academic and personal development of members of the set during their years at the school.

Among the distinguished guests were Otunba Obajimi, the only principal who served during the set’s six years at Government College Ketu, and Prince Osinaike, a retired Tutor General and former housemaster.

The celebration also featured a live performance by Afro-Jùjú music icon, Shina Peters, adding a musical highlight to the anniversary festivities.

The silver jubilee celebrations provided members of the 2001 set with an opportunity to celebrate their shared history, honour those who contributed to their development and renew their commitment to their alma mater.
