Inter-Tribal Marriage Promotes Peace, Unity – Otti

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has described inter-tribal marriage as a vital social instrument for fostering national unity, peace, and mutual understanding in a culturally diverse country like Nigeria.

Otti stated this on Friday in Umuahia during the wedding ceremony of his youngest sister, Dr. Ngozi Otti, who married her husband, Ileri Adeniji, an indigene of Ogun State.

The governor noted that marriage across ethnic lines strengthens family bonds and promotes harmony among different cultures, stressing that African marriage is rooted in unity, love, and extended family relationships.

Recalling that another of his sisters is also married to a man from Ogun State, Otti said the development had further strengthened ties between both families, describing inter-tribal unions as a bridge for national cohesion.

“So I advise you to look after your husband and his people. They are now your family and you must take them as one too. Marriage in Africa is all about family and you must take that into consideration,” he said.

He urged the couple to work towards a successful marriage, stressing that the responsibility for its success rests largely on the bride. He also advised them to resolve misunderstandings privately and avoid divorce or separation.

Reflecting on their family journey following the passing of their mother, the governor praised his wife, Priscilla Otti, for stepping in as a second mother to his younger sister.

Earlier, in a sermon at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Isingwu, Umuahia, Pastor Bukola Ajide urged the couple to remain committed to peace, love, and understanding in their union regardless of challenges.

Guests at the wedding, including the Group Managing Director of Aiteo/Nembe E&P, Mazi Victor Okoronkwo; former World Bank Vice President and Treasurer, Arunma Oteh; and Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu, Prof. Catherine Uju Ifejika, advised the couple to sustain their marriage with mutual respect and avoid third-party interference.

Meanwhile, the Abia State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has commended Governor Otti for his leadership style and developmental strides in the state, describing him as a symbol of Igbo excellence and innovation.

Addressing a press conference in Umuahia, the group’s Publicity Secretary, Godwin Adindu, said Otti had earned widespread admiration through infrastructural renewal, improved governance, and cultural promotion.

He said the governor’s achievements across infrastructure, health, education, and civil service reforms had positively impacted the lives of residents, particularly through the transformation of Aba, the commercial hub of the state.

Adindu further noted that the creation of the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy and the promotion of traditional attire within the state executive council reflected Otti’s commitment to preserving Igbo culture.

He announced that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Abia State chapter, had passed a vote of commendation and confidence on the governor, urging him to sustain people-oriented governance.

“The organisation is impressed with the giant strides recorded by Governor Alex Chioma Otti and will continue to recognise leaders who promote the Igbo cause and drive development,” Adindu said.

He added that the group would continue to support leaders and entrepreneurs contributing to the advancement of the Igbo nation.
