‘Wike Is Not an APC Member, But He Serves Tinubu Government’ — National Secretary
The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has clarified that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is not a member of the ruling party, but currently serves under President Bola Tinubu’s APC-led administration.
Basiru made the statement while responding to public debates over Wike’s political alignment and his role in the Tinubu government. He said Wike’s performance in office has enhanced the image of the APC in the FCT.
Speaking on the television programme Beyond The Headlines, Basiru linked the APC’s recent victory in FCT local government elections to the scale of infrastructure projects overseen by Wike. He noted that visible development across Abuja and surrounding communities strengthened voters’ confidence in the ruling party.
“The changes are not limited to major city centres; they extend to suburban and previously neglected areas,” Basiru said, describing Wike’s performance as “sterling” and a reflection of the Tinubu administration’s achievements.
He added that the party’s internal strategies, including direct engagement with residents and careful selection of candidates with proven political records — even from other parties — contributed to its success at the polls.
Basiru stressed that governance and political success are closely linked when citizens can see tangible projects. He said:
“Wike is not a member of our party, but he works for an APC government headed by Tinubu.
“When you see the massive infrastructural development in the FCT, not only in urban areas but even in the suburbs, the sterling performance of the FCT Minister, together with our party’s engagement and selection of experienced candidates, has contributed to APC’s victory in the local government elections.
“You cannot separate the effective delivery of the dividends of democracy in the FCT from our party’s success in that election.”
