Fubara Urges Leaders to Prioritise Justice Over Personal Interests

Port Harcourt – The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on Nigeria’s judiciary and political class to prioritise legacy and justice above personal gain, stressing that “the true measure of leaders lies in how their service ends.”

The governor made the remarks on Wednesday night during a state banquet at the Government House, Port Harcourt, organised in honour of Justice Obietonbara Owupele Daniel-Kalio, who recently retired from the Court of Appeal, Asaba Division. The statement was issued on Thursday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi.

Addressing jurists, government officials, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries, Fubara emphasised the need to maintain high standards in public service, saying that excellence can be restored through collective effort despite challenges.

“It is about us coming together, believing in setting a standard and not allowing our personal interests to override those standards. That is the only way we can restore the good old days,” he said.

Describing the retired jurist as a role model, the governor urged younger lawyers and politicians to uphold truth and integrity in all aspects of their lives.

“The message tonight is about how a career ends. The conclusion of Justice Daniel-Kalio’s service brings honour to the state. It is a lesson for the upcoming young ones and for those of us in politics. When we leave the stage, how will our story be told? It is not about winning now; it is about how it ends. We must strive to do the right things to defend the most important thing, and that is justice. Always stand on the side of truth so that, at the end, you will be remembered for what is right,” Fubara stated.

The governor also noted that although Justice Daniel-Kalio has retired, he is “not tired” and remains strong enough to contribute to the development of Rivers State. He assured that the state government would explore ways to benefit from the retired jurist’s wealth of knowledge and experience.

Expressing gratitude to guests, Fubara said their presence marked an important period in his administration and acknowledged their support. “Our vision and desire here is to ensure that Rivers State continues to grow from strength to strength,” he added.
