Tinubu Summons Ondo Governor Over APC Congress Violence
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly summoned Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, following deadly violence that erupted during the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congresses in Idanre and Akure North Local Government Areas, which allegedly left four people dead.
A government source in Akure told Vanguard that Governor Aiyedatiwa departed the state capital for Abuja on Thursday, a day after the tragic incidents on Wednesday. The summons came amid the governor’s planned activities to mark his one-year anniversary in office.
The source noted that Aiyedatiwa had inaugurated the Igoba and Alagbaka Extension roads earlier but had to cut short the scheduled unveiling of a 100,000-litre water supply project at the Federal University of Technology, Akure Teaching Hospital Complex. His deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, represented him at subsequent anniversary events.
“The summons was dispatched to the governor late on Thursday following a series of security reports available to Mr. President,” the source said. “We were already preparing for our anniversary activities on Wednesday evening when we were informed that the governor would not be available the following day.”
According to the source, President Tinubu is reportedly displeased over the killings. “We learnt Mr. President is very angry over the incident and wants to know from the governor what went wrong, even though the state faces no clear opposition against the APC,” the source added.
It could not be independently confirmed whether Aiyedatiwa met the President in Abuja, but he has since returned to Akure. President Tinubu has yet to officially comment on the matter.
Security Operations Intensify After Monarch’s Killing
In the wake of the violence, security agencies have ramped up operations following the killing of the traditional ruler of Agamo Town, Oba Kehinde Jacob Faledun. The monarch was reportedly abducted and killed by suspected gunmen at about 7:10 p.m. on February 18, 2026.
Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, led a high-powered delegation—including the Commander of 32 Brigade, the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Director of the Department of State Services—to assess the situation on the ground.
Preliminary investigations indicated that six masked gunmen stormed the monarch’s residence, abducted him, and attacked him violently, resulting in his death.
Lawal assured residents that the perpetrators would be tracked down. “The Command, in synergy with other security agencies, will spare no effort in ensuring that the perpetrators are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice,” he said. Additional tactical teams and operational assets have been deployed to the area.
He urged residents to provide credible information to aid the investigations, stressing that effective policing requires collaboration between security agencies and the public. “The Command will continue to work tirelessly to ensure peace, stability, and justice across all communities in Ondo State,” Lawal affirmed.
