Sanwo-Olu urges Red Cross to embrace technology for emergency response in Lagos

Sanwo-Olu Urges Red Cross to Embrace Technology for Enhanced Humanitarian Response in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) to adopt innovative approaches and leverage technology in humanitarian and emergency response across the state. The appeal was made during his goodwill message at the 58th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the NRCS, Lagos State branch, on Saturday.

Represented by Sesan Ogundeko, Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Governor Sanwo-Olu advised the Red Cross to make effective use of data and digital tools to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency management in the state.

Describing the AGM as more than a routine meeting, the governor said it was a “celebration of compassion, service, and humanity” spanning 58 years of Red Cross operations in Lagos. Highlighting the state’s estimated population of about 20 million, he noted the growing challenges of rapid urbanisation, climate change, and infrastructural pressures.

“In a city as large and fast-growing as Lagos, emergencies are sometimes unavoidable,” he said, adding that disaster preparedness and timely emergency response were essential components of building a resilient state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu urged the NRCS leadership to remain innovative, transparent, and accountable, stressing that technology and data could significantly improve humanitarian services. He also highlighted the importance of strong partnerships, noting that the government alone cannot handle the scale of emergencies in a megacity like Lagos.

The governor reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting the Red Cross in promoting voluntary blood donation and assisting vulnerable communities. He further appealed to residents to become active responders during emergencies rather than passive observers, decrying the trend where young people record accidents instead of helping victims.

“Each one of us can make a difference through simple actions; checking on a neighbour, donating blood, volunteering your time, learning first aid, and supporting those in need,” he said, envisioning a Lagos where compassion spreads as fast as information online.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also commended Red Cross volunteers, describing them as everyday heroes who risk their safety to save lives. “When floods displace families, when road accidents occur, or when emergencies strike unexpectedly, Nigerian Red Cross volunteers are often among the first to respond,” he said. He assured the branch that requests previously submitted to the state government would receive a positive response.

Earlier, Adebola Kolawole, Chairman of NRCS Lagos, described the AGM as a pivotal moment for reflection, accountability, and strategic renewal. She outlined the branch’s commitment to becoming financially self-reliant and setting the standard for humanitarian service delivery in Lagos.

“Our administration remains steadfast in repositioning the Lagos State Branch as a beacon of humanitarian excellence,” she said, highlighting sustainability, inclusivity, impact measurement, advocacy, and collaboration as key pillars for the next phase. Kolawole also emphasized the need for additional support from government, corporate organizations, and individuals to fund ambulances, disaster response equipment, personal protective gear, and a solar power project to enhance branch operations.
