Mpape Residents Urge Immediate Resumption of Abandoned Road Project
Residents of Mpape in the Bwari Area Council have appealed to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, to immediately resume work on the stalled Mpape Road project, describing it as the community’s primary access route.
In a letter submitted on Friday, the residents highlighted the road’s importance, noting that it also serves as a critical link to other parts of the FCT.
Donatus Shekwolo, who signed the letter on behalf of the community, commended ongoing infrastructure reforms across the territory but urged the minister not to overlook Mpape.
He described the suspension of the project as a source of significant hardship for residents and commuters, citing daily traffic gridlocks, prolonged travel times, frequent vehicle breakdowns, and rising transportation costs. He further warned that the road’s condition heightens safety risks, particularly during the rainy season.
“Mpape hosts an estimated 500,000 residents, including civil servants, artisans, and traders contributing to Abuja’s economy,” Mr. Shekwolo noted. He added that the area accommodates the Julius Berger Nigeria Plc quarry site, which supports construction activities across the city, and that heavy-duty trucks alongside commercial and private vehicles are worsening the road’s deterioration.
The letter also expressed concern over the impact on residents, stating that several houses and businesses were demolished to make way for the project, leaving many families displaced and portions of land unsafe.
“Completing the road will enhance mobility, economic activities, security, and emergency response services. We urge the minister to intervene and ensure the immediate resumption and timely completion of this project,” the residents appealed.
