FCT Elections: Sowore Blames Low Turnout on Tinubu’s Electoral Act Signing
By Uduma – February 22, 2026

Abuja — Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has attributed the low voter turnout in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections to President Bola Tinubu’s recent signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Sowore made the comments on Saturday at the 001 Polling Unit, LEA Primary School, Kabusa, in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

According to him, many Nigerians have lost confidence in the electoral process, leading to widespread voter apathy.

“What we have discovered is that more and more of our people are no longer voting, and I think it was made worse by the newly signed electoral law, which doesn’t give transparency the oxygen it needs. Democracy thrives on one essential thing — trust,” Sowore said.

He added, “The moment trust is lost, people stay at home because voting is voluntary — you invest your time and resources. If you feel the process will not produce the results you want, you simply don’t leave your house.”

Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, noted that while the FCT elections are important, Nigerians’ attention is primarily focused on the 2027 general elections.
