Otti Backs Tinubu’s Tax Reforms, Says Critics Lack Understanding

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s new tax reform laws, insisting that critics of the policy “do not fully understand” its provisions.

Governor Otti noted that several elements of the new tax framework echo proposals he made nearly a decade ago regarding Nigeria’s fiscal direction.

“Almost 10 years ago, I wrote about the fiscal side of things. When I read the new tax reform law, I saw many of those arguments reflected in it. I thank Prof. Oyedele. When people attack him, they don’t understand,” Otti said, referencing the chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele.

The governor’s comments signal strong support for the administration’s ongoing efforts to restructure the country’s tax system.

The reforms, led by Prof. Oyedele, have sparked mixed reactions nationwide. While some stakeholders have expressed concern about the potential impact of the new policies, Otti emphasized that the framework is grounded in sound fiscal reasoning.

By drawing on his past economic writings, Governor Otti suggested that the reforms are aligned with long-standing proposals aimed at boosting revenue generation and strengthening Nigeria’s economic foundation.
