My Appointments Are Based on Merit, Governor Otti Declares as He Celebrates Former SSG
By Uduma, Ohafia
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reaffirmed that appointments within his administration are strictly merit-based, emphasizing competence and dedication as the criteria for selection. He made this declaration during a ceremony honoring the state’s former Secretary to the Government (SSG), Professor Kenneth Kalu.
Governor Otti explained that Professor Kalu, who served as the pioneer SSG under his administration, left last year on a leave of absence and later resigned to rejoin his family overseas. In recognition of Kalu’s contributions and dedication to the state, Otti appointed him President of the Abia Leadership Academy.
“I chose him based on his capacity to deliver, not where he comes from,” the governor said. “The paraphernalia of office is less important than the office itself because governance is about the people. Our focus is restoring the dignity of our citizens, not politics or personal gain.”
He further stressed that his administration prioritizes talent over ethnicity, religion, or state of origin. “Once you have something to offer to this government, you are already hired,” Otti declared.
The governor also thanked Dr. (Mrs.) Ezinne Ben Kalu, wife of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, for her support and engagement with the state during her stay. He asked her to convey his profound greetings to her husband.
In his remarks, the new SSG, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, lauded his predecessor, describing Professor Kalu as a passionate and dedicated public servant whose work continues to inspire others. Several other officials, including Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Chief of Staff to the Governor; Professor Uche Emeh Uche, Commissioner for Tertiary Education; and Hon. Acho Obioma, Special Adviser on Political Matters, praised Kalu for his humility, professionalism, and commitment to stabilizing the state government.
Prominent guests at the event, including the Chairman of ALGON Abia State, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke; the Pro-Chancellor of ABSU, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu; and the immediate past Mayor of Ohafia LGA, Chief David Ogba Onuoha, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Kalu’s intellect, dedication, and humility in service.
In his response, Professor Kalu expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for the honor of serving as SSG. He described Otti’s leadership as a “prayer answered” for Abia citizens, citing the governor’s investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and timely payment of salaries and pensions.
“The most significant achievement of this government is restoring the dignity of the Abia person,” Kalu said. “I am proud of what has been accomplished and remain committed to contributing in any capacity to ensure the continuity of this movement.”
The colorful event drew a host of dignitaries, top government officials, and members of the Abam Onyerubi community from Arochukwu LGA.
