Man Flogged 30 Strokes, Fined N20,000 for Allegedly Assaulting Aged Parents in Abia

A man identified as Sunny Uma Okwara has reportedly been given 30 strokes of the cane by a women’s group in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State for allegedly assaulting his aged parents.

Okwara, who was also accused of physically assaulting his wife, was further fined N20,000 by the Nde Umuada, the traditional umbrella body of married women and daughters in the community.

According to a video of the incident circulating online, the suspect, said to be from Amaekpu in Ohafia, had allegedly developed a pattern of attacking his elderly parents over minor disagreements. The situation reportedly compelled the couple to petition the Umuada for intervention and judgment.

In the video, Okwara was seen lying on the ground while members of the women’s group administered the 30 strokes of the cane. He was also warned sternly never to assault his parents or wife again, an order he reportedly agreed to obey.

The Umuada described his alleged actions as a sacrilege that could not be condoned in the community. They stated that the N20,000 fine imposed on him would be used to conduct traditional cleansing rites at the village square, which they said had been desecrated by his conduct.
