A lone demonstrator has drawn nationwide attention after staging a one-man protest in support of extending the tenure of President Bola Tinubu to 16 years in office, triggering widespread and divided reactions across Nigeria.
The protest, captured in a viral video, shows the man publicly advocating a constitutional change that would allow the president to remain in office beyond the current two-term limit. Under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, a president may serve a maximum of two four-year terms. Any extension would require a formal constitutional amendment approved through legislative and state processes.
The incident comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections. Opposition leaders have intensified consultations and coalition-building efforts aimed at preventing Tinubu’s re-election. A newly formed opposition bloc has adopted the African Democratic Congress as its political platform for the next presidential contest.
At the same time, several opposition governors, senators, and party leaders have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, which has publicly declared support for Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Public response to the lone protest has been sharply divided. Critics dismissed the demonstrator as a partisan supporter, arguing that the call for a longer tenure reflects misplaced priorities amid current economic challenges. Others suggested the protest may have been intended as satire or political commentary rather than a literal demand.
Some commentators, however, defended the protester’s right to free expression, noting that individuals are entitled to hold and voice personal political views regardless of public disagreement.
The episode underscores growing political polarization as parties and voters begin positioning for the 2027 race, with debates over governance, economic conditions, and constitutional limits expected to remain central campaign issues.
