The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Returning Officer announced that Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat other candidates in the contest. The candidate of the All Progressives Congress came second with 17,788 votes.
According to the electoral official, the PDP candidate met all legal requirements and was duly returned elected.
A breakdown of the results shows that the All Progressives Grand Alliance scored 1,687 votes, while the African Democratic Congress secured 1,336 votes.
INEC conducted elections on Saturday across the six area councils — Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali — as well as councillorship polls in 62 wards across the territory.
Meanwhile, former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad attributed the low voter turnout recorded in parts of the FCT and in by-elections held in Rivers and Kano states to the ongoing Ramadan fast. He noted that many Muslim faithful typically reduce movement during fasting hours and focus more on spiritual activities.
Ahmad also renewed calls for INEC to review the timetable for the 2027 general elections, which is currently scheduled to fall within the Ramadan period.
