Geometric Power, ASERA Commended For Sustainable Electricity Supply, Regulatory Reforms

Geometric Power, ASERA Receive Praise for Efficient Electricity Supply and Regulatory Reforms

Oriental Renaissance, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has commended Geometric Power Ltd and the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERA) for their contributions to business development through efficient electricity supply and effective regulatory reforms.

The independent appraisal by the NGO gave a positive verdict on Geometric Power, Nigeria’s leading integrated power group, following a recent visit to its facilities. ASERA, the newly established state electricity regulatory body, was also lauded for inspiring public confidence in the sector.

The assessment comes in the wake of statements by ASERA leadership describing Aba Power, a member of the Geometric Power Group, as setting the benchmark against which Nigeria’s 11 other electricity distribution companies (DisCos) will now be measured.

The ASERA delegation that visited Geometric Power was led by Executive Chairman Engr. Emeka Onyegbule, alongside Executive Director of Legal and Regulatory Matters, Iguwo Ukwu, and Executive Director of Engineering and Technical Affairs, Iheanyi Weze.

In its appraisal, Oriental Renaissance noted that many regulatory agencies in Nigeria have historically focused more on punishing businesses than promoting those that comply with standards. The NGO cited the example of the late Professor Dora Akunyili’s leadership of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), which disciplined offenders while publicly encouraging compliant organizations such as Nigerian Breweries Plc, May & Baker, and Nemeith Pharmaceuticals Plc.

“By publicly sharing its positive evaluation of Geometric Power’s impressive record, ASERA has demonstrated a similar approach to promoting public interests and business development,” the NGO said in a statement signed by its President, Dr. Richard Ogbonna, and Secretary, Barrister Uche Nwosu.

The group emphasized that regulators exist to protect the interests of all stakeholders—including consumers, government, and businesses—and that punitive approaches should not overshadow the promotion of compliant operators.

Oriental Renaissance further highlighted that ASERA’s efforts reinforce Governor Alex Otti’s assertion that Abia is ready for business. The state’s reliable electricity supply has attracted global brands such as Marriott and Radisson to Aba, alongside major investments like the multibillion-naira Enyimba Economic City, modeled after Chinese cities like Shanghai.

“Constant and quality electricity in the nine local government areas within the Aba Ring-fenced Area is a true game changer,” the NGO concluded, noting that ASERA’s transparent recognition of Geometric Power sets a modern standard for regulatory practices in Nigeria.
