Wike Pledges to Back Only Tinubu-Aligned Candidates in FCT Elections

Abuja – Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will support only candidates who endorse President Bola Tinubu’s vision in the upcoming FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, regardless of their political party.

Speaking on Saturday night at Senator Sandy Onor’s 60th birthday celebration, Wike said he owed no one an apology for his position. “It is my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand,” he emphasized.

Onor, the celebrant, was described by Wike as a “credible ally, a trustworthy friend, and good brother.” Wike added, “I will continue to be with you and work with you, because I know even if I am not alive today, you will not abandon my family.”

Prof. Anthony Eyang, reading Onor’s citation, highlighted the senator’s journey from the lecture halls of the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate and Cross River politics, calling it “a life devoted to learning, leadership, and the advancement of society.”

Senator Philip Aduda, Chairman of the planning committee, said the event was a thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness in Onor’s life, both as an academic and a politician. Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Otom, standing in for Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, lauded Onor as an “icon” and a man fit for leadership.

Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Chief Kalu Agabi (SAN), praised Onor as courageous and intelligent, adding, “I love Sen. Sandy Onor because he is not one of those who stigmatize the constitution as a product of the military.”

Professor Dave Imbua, Head of Department of History and International Studies, University of Calabar, presented a Festschrift—a scholarly book honoring the celebrant. The book was unveiled by Ikpeazu on behalf of Wike and friends, supported by a reported N50 million contribution.
