EPL: Slot Frustrated by “Same Old Story” After Wolves Stun Liverpool in Late Drama
Arne Slot did not mince words after Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Tuesday night, describing the result as a frustrating continuation of a recurring pattern this season.
“Same old story,” the Dutch coach told our correspondent on Wednesday, reflecting on a game dominated by Liverpool but ultimately lost in stoppage time.
Rodrigo Gomes had opened the scoring for Wolves in the 78th minute, only for Mohamed Salah to restore parity shortly after. However, Andre’s deflected stoppage-time strike handed Wolves the win, leaving Liverpool empty-handed despite controlling 65.8 per cent of possession and winning 11 corners to Wolves’ two.
Slot highlighted Liverpool’s ongoing struggles in front of goal. “Recently, we are picking up points because many times we’ve scored from set-pieces, but what did not change in the last five, six or seven games is that we struggle and find it very hard to score from the open-play chances that we do create,” he said. “Enough chances and far more than the other team, but end result, we score one and they score two.”
Despite Liverpool’s dominance, Slot acknowledged Wolves’ defensive resilience. “Well done by Wolves. They made it really hard for us, compact,” he said, praising their disciplined structure.
Liverpool showed signs of improvement after the break, creating several chances in extra time, including a Salah dribble that was intercepted and a late Virgil van Dijk header saved by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa. Yet the decisive goal came from a situation Slot described as “not even a chance,” emblematic of the team’s season-long misfortune.
Slot also addressed issues in execution and pace. “It was possible to play a bit faster from side to side. And if you play a bit faster than the few times that we did in the first half, our wingers at least have some time to take their full-back on,” he said.
On the broader season picture, Slot admitted that expectations had shifted but not collapsed. “My expectations have changed throughout the season because I expected more from us than where we are fighting for now,” he said. “There are still eight games to play, so we are coming closer and closer to the end, and then dropping points in a game where it’s absolutely not necessary if you look at the run of play.”
Reflecting on the deflected strike that sealed Liverpool’s fate, Slot remained measured. “You can always do things differently, but a deflected shot, I have to see if he could do anything about that or not, or it was just bad luck. But it’s not the first time a ball goes in from a deflected shot.”
For Slot, Tuesday’s defeat was a reminder of a familiar frustration: a team dominating possession and creating chances, yet repeatedly undone by inefficiency and a cruel twist of fate.
