EFCC Probes Alleged N10 Billion Abia Airport Fraud, Gov Otti Confirms
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating the alleged misappropriation of N10 billion intended for the construction of a non-existent Abia Airport by the previous administration. The governor made the disclosure on Friday night during his February media chat, noting that the commission is still summoning individuals who received the funds into their accounts.
Governor Otti explained that his administration had formally petitioned the EFCC regarding the purportedly looted funds. He expressed confidence that the money would be recovered, stating that those involved would return the funds “at the appropriate time.”
A forensic audit had earlier revealed that the N10 billion, earmarked for the airport project under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, was misappropriated. The report indicated that the funds were transferred to 32 different accounts, raising serious concerns over financial mismanagement.
Highlighting his administration’s focus on good governance and development, Governor Otti said, “We are still on it and I’m sure that at the appropriate time they will bring back the money.”
In a related announcement, the governor introduced subsidised fares for the state’s recently launched Electric Bus Services on two major routes. Commuters will now pay N800 from Umuahia to Aba, and N1,000 from Umuahia to Ohafia.
“It is going to be cheap and organised in such a way that cash will not be accepted. You have to pay with your ATM card because we need to move up the ladder in our digital transformation. That’s where the world is going,” he said.
The free bus service, which had been operational since its launch in December 2025, will end on February 28.
