Edo Attack: PDP Chieftain Ogidi Calls for Thorough Investigation
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogidi, has urged a full-scale investigation into the recent attack on African Democratic Congress (ADC) members in Edo State.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Ogidi described the violent incident involving prominent political figures as a “bad omen” for the nation’s democracy, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching.
He condemned the attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and other ADC leaders, calling it unacceptable. Ogidi appealed to President Bola Tinubu to direct security agencies to probe the threats against ADC members and ensure those responsible are prosecuted.
“Decisive steps must be taken to prevent a recurrence and to safeguard Nigeria’s political landscape from preventable violence,” he said.
Ogidi highlighted the worsening state of political contests, noting, “First, it was attacks by bandits and herdsmen; now, politicians are going after one another. You can also see what happened in Abuja during Saturday’s elections, where some sponsored political thugs disrupted the process in Abaji Area Council.”
He called for political tolerance among actors and stressed that the culture of “personal entitlement” in Nigerian politics must end.
“What is happening now will make many people afraid to participate in future elections. We must not allow this to happen,” Ogidi warned, urging Nigerians not to be intimidated by any group and reminding them that “Nigeria belongs to all of us.”
