A member of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Affairs, Fred Agbedi, has praised opposition lawmakers for their actions during Tuesday’s rowdy plenary session over the proposed real-time electronic transmission of election results.
The lawmaker made the remarks while reacting to the heated exchanges that followed moves by some legislators to reverse the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. According to a report by Daily Post, several members staged a walkout in protest, disrupting proceedings on the floor of the House.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Agbedi said the chanting and eventual walkout by some lawmakers clearly expressed their dissatisfaction with the development.
“The Reps members were chanting as they staged a walkout of the House. It showed their displeasure,” he said. “It couldn’t have led to that level, but I say kudos to the opposition. They made me proud. They did their best. They stood for Nigeria and Nigerians, and for the right thing to be done.”
He, however, noted that the protest escalated after the majority caucus turned the disagreement into a party-driven matter involving the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The protest followed the adoption of Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, after which some lawmakers were heard chanting “APC Ole” on the floor, underscoring the deep divisions that trailed deliberations on the bill.
