Peter Obi Thanks Nigerians Following Edo Attack, Calls for National Unity

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and solidarity following an attack on him and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State on Tuesday.

In a post on his verified X handle on Wednesday, Obi described acts of lawlessness as “not new” to him, reflecting on past experiences with violence and insecurity in Anambra State that motivated his pursuit of leadership to restore order and public trust.

Obi thanked Nigerians for their prayers, calls, and messages of support, particularly for the families of distinguished former Edo State governors, Chief John Oyegun and Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, who were also targeted during the attack.

“I especially appreciate your support during this difficult time for the family of the distinguished elder and former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun, as well as for another former Governor, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor,” he wrote. “Your support has strengthened my faith in our shared humanity and our collective hope for a better Nigeria.”

He urged Nigerians to rise to the challenge of growing lawlessness in the country, stressing the importance of electing leaders guided by competence, character, and compassion. Obi cited Plato, noting, “The price good people pay for refusing to participate in government is to live under the rule of bad people.”

Concluding his message, Obi called for courage, unity, and collective effort to build “the peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria our people deserve.”
