Adamawa Speaker, 14 Lawmakers Quit PDP Amid Political Speculation
Wesley Bathiya, Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alongside 14 other lawmakers.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during plenary, as Bathiya presented letters of resignation on behalf of the affected members. He called for order and read the letters one after another, formally confirming their exit from the ruling party.
The development comes amid growing speculation that Governor Umaru Fintiri may be considering a move from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), though no official confirmation has been made.
Mahmud Kallamu, chairman of the House Committee on Information and one of the defecting lawmakers, described the move as “strategic.” An APC lawmaker, speaking on the sidelines, said the party would welcome the defectors should they choose to join.
Although the lawmakers have yet to announce their next political destination, analysts predict that many may align with the APC. With the defections, the PDP’s strength in the House has dropped from 25 to 10 members.
