In a historic move to curb maternal mortality, the Abia State Government has commenced construction of a General Hospital in Ohanku Ndoki, Ukwa East Local Government Area—a region that has lacked a major healthcare facility since its creation over two decades ago.
The absence of a general hospital in Ukwa East has long contributed to high maternal mortality rates in the state. At the ground-breaking ceremony, indigenes of the area expressed overwhelming excitement, particularly as the traditional ruler, His Royal Highness Eze Chibuzor Chinyere, generously donated 100 plots of land for the hospital project. He said the initiative would stimulate the local economy and accelerate physical development in the community.
Governor Alex Otti, who performed the flag-off ceremony, said the hospital reflects his administration’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to all corners of Abia State. “This project aligns with our vision of building a responsive and inclusive health system capable of meeting the needs of rural communities,” he said, commending Eze Chinyere for his contribution.
The traditional ruler, also the Founder and General Overseer of OPM, explained that the land, initially acquired for commercial purposes, was donated to save lives. “Healthcare in Ukwa East is practically non-existent. We have only a dilapidated health centre where cockroaches, rats, and reptiles thrive. Life is more important than business, so I decided to donate 100 plots for the hospital,” he said.
Eze Chinyere expressed optimism that the hospital would transform the community, attract ancillary businesses such as pharmacies and hotels, and create opportunities for local youths. “This General Hospital will bring transformation. My people are happy, and they will protect the facility,” he added.
Speaking at the event, Chris Nkwonta, member representing Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency, hailed the project as a long-awaited milestone since 1999 and pledged support for its realization.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, noted the hardship residents previously endured, often traveling long distances to private facilities in Azumini for care. “Women in labor faced dangerous journeys, contributing to high infant and maternal mortality. This hospital will change that,” he said.
Health Commissioner Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche revealed that Ukwa East has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in Abia State and is among the local governments contributing significantly to national statistics. “Governor Otti has promised a world-class hospital here, with modern facilities, skilled personnel, and full equipment to drastically reduce maternal deaths,” he stated.
Former Senate President and PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, also commended Governor Otti for prioritizing healthcare infrastructure over political affiliations, praising his holistic approach to improving healthcare delivery in the state.
