Abia State launches free glaucoma screenings across primary health centres

The Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau has called on residents to take advantage of the ongoing free glaucoma screening at selected primary health centres across the state as part of activities marking Glaucoma Week 2026. The bureau encouraged members of the public to visit the nearest participating facility to undergo the free eye examination and also urge their friends, relatives and neighbours to do the same. It stressed that glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide and often develops gradually without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, making regular eye checks essential for early detection and treatment. According to the bureau, timely diagnosis can help slow the progression of the disease and prevent severe vision loss, particularly among individuals above 40 years of age and those with a family history of glaucoma who are considered to be at higher risk.

“Early diagnosis is key to preventing glaucoma-related blindness. We urge all residents to make use of this free service,” the bureau said.

It added that the initiative forms part of the Abia State Government’s broader efforts to strengthen eye health services, improve access to quality healthcare at the grassroots level and increase public awareness about preventable eye conditions among communities across the state. The bureau noted that expanding access to routine eye examinations through primary health centres will help more residents detect eye problems early and receive appropriate medical care.
