Abia Directs Companies To Strictly Adhere To CSR Initiative To Enhance Community’s Relationships

Abia CSR Leader Urges Companies to Fulfill Civic Responsibilities

Umuahia, Abia State – Dr. John Nwadighoha, leader of the Abia State Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, has called on companies operating in the state to take corporate social responsibility seriously, describing it as a key civic duty to the communities that host them.

Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, Nwadighoha revealed that over 75 companies across Abia—ranging from large to medium and small enterprises—have been identified for sensitization on their obligations toward host communities. He also unveiled a structured framework aimed at fostering stronger collaboration between government and the private sector to accelerate sustainable development in the state.

“Corporate Social Responsibility is a globally recognised concept that encourages companies to go beyond profit-making and actively contribute to social and economic development,” Nwadighoha said. “The initiative serves as a bridge between government and corporate organisations, ensuring that private sector investments align with the developmental priorities of Abia State.”

Under the framework, communities are empowered to propose development projects capable of attracting corporate support, promoting grassroots-driven initiatives. A key feature of the model is an annual engagement process, where companies are expected to present their budgets, CSR plans, and proposed community development projects to the CSR platform.

“This process ensures transparency, accountability, and alignment between corporate spending and community needs,” he explained. “Our CSR team provides advisory support during planning and budgeting cycles, integrating corporate interventions into the broader government development framework.”

Dr. Nwadighoha also noted that the CSR team operates under the Abia State Policy Innovation Centre, headed by Rev. Father Anokwuru, Special Adviser to the Governor on Policies and Interventions. He stressed that while companies are expected to comply with tax obligations, this does not exempt them from fulfilling their CSR duties.

“The approach ensures that private sector contributions are coordinated, impactful, and sustainable,” Nwadighoha said. He further emphasised that the state government is concerned not only with business operations but also with the long-term social impact of companies. By institutionalising annual CSR disclosures and structured partnerships, he added, the initiative creates a system where businesses can strengthen community trust while meaningfully contributing to development outcomes.
